“The themes of the works may well spring from social problems but Brotherus is ambitious and keen on artistic quality.”- Finnish Dance in Focus 2019-2020
Fragile: work-in-progress is the first creation of Finnish choreographer Hanna Brotherus in Hong Kong. Conducting the rehearsal via online platform, Hanna has encouraged the participants to explore the emotion hidden in their bodies, reflect the value of empathy for every human experience and the strength that lies within us.
This programme is a valuable record of the creative process of this work-in-progress. The work attempts to relieve our frailty through physical touch and making connections. At a time when the new normal is about social distancing, human connections may mean something very differently to us now than it did before.
Fragile was originally conceived for 80 members from the community and was scheduled to premiere at the Hong Kong Arts Festival in Tai Kwun last February. Due to the anti-epidemic measures, the number of participants is reduced to 24.

Dancer, director and choreographer Hanna Brotherus is without a doubt one of the top names in Finnish contemporary dance. In addition to being artistically resolute and exceptionally inventive, she is an artist with a clearly original voice. Her work constantly addresses and probes the prevalent questions of society.
Brotherus is a pioneer in community stage art, with an extraordinary ability to unite different groups of people and collaborators. Her partners have, among others, included the Finnish National Opera, the Helsinki City Theatre, the Tampere Worker’s Theatre TTT and the Finnish National Theatre. In her work, Brotherus has managed to unreservedly involve both cutting-edge artistic professionals, recovering addicts, daycare children, the elderly and many more.
She has been crossing the borders between art and well-being long before any similar cross-sectional programs were even mentioned in Finland. For Brotherus, this intersection is a natural choice: each theme is founded on actual surrounding circumstances, and every working group is created differently based on attributes and age. The authenticity and presence of the performers is therefore always tangible and distinctly, artistically personal – simultaneously fragile and powerful.
”My passion is to join together different people from different backgrounds and age groups. I believe in intuition, in the power of the touch and presence”.
Jones Maxwell is a set and costume designer mainly working in Finland. He works in a wide spectrum of areas including television, dance performances and museums. Fragile is his fourth time designing for Hanna Brotherus Company.
Johannes Brotherus is a versatile composer, producer, actor and musician. He is the lead singer of the band “KUUMAA”. In addition to his own music he writes music for films, television, dance performances and other recording artists. He is also a trained violin player and writes string arrangements for different commercial and artistic purposes. Johannes has also acted in a variety of Finnish television series and films.
Kardo Shiwan is contemporary dance artist from Finland with a versatile background in movement. He has studied hip hop, house, ballet as well as contemporary dance.
Ever since graduating from the University of Arts Helsinki he has worked extensively both in Finland as well as internationally. One highlight is Wilhelmiina Ojanen’s A Whisper in the Order of Things at Sadler’s Wells in London.
